The oldest of Columbus’ north side neighborhoods, Italian Village is known for its streetscapes of mostly brick homes. Adjacent to Downtown Columbus, the neighborhood is part of the flourishing Short North Arts District, with fantastic shopping, art galleries and restaurants located in an urban setting.

Italian Village’s development was spurred by the growth of Columbus’ Union Station and the rail yard to its south and was settled by a variety of railroad and industrial workers, including Italian and Irish immigrants. The Italians built Columbus’ Italian Catholic Church here, St. John the Baptist, in 1897.

Today the neighborhood is one of the most affordable and desirable of Columbus’ historic areas, with a diverse and friendly mix of residents. After a long period of decline, a renaissance began with the formation of the Italian Village Society in 1973, and by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Since then, Italian Village has experienced an explosion of new historically appropriate “infill” homes in addition to the ongoing sensitive rehabs of our wonderful historic homes.
