Columbus City Council Needs to Hear Your Support of Streetcars!

Columbus Mayor Coleman recently presented a $1 billion capital budget to City Council. Included in that is a $2 million proposal to move forward with the next steps in the downtown Streetcar initiative. This would provide design and engineering work.

Council argued the use of these funds at a public meeting held on Tuesday, April 15. Council members said at that meeting they want to hear more from the public before it votes on this proposal at its May 5 Council Meeting.

Council is purportedly receiving as many as 15 opposing to 1 supporting letters.

If you support Columbus moving forward with the Streetcar, Council members need to hear from you NOW.

We suggest you:

  • Attend ColumbusUnderground’s Streetcar Letter Writing Breakfast this Saturday (see announcement below)
  • Send your own letter to City Council
  • Speak to Council at one of the next three council meetings, Monday, April 21, 28 and May 5 (See this link for more information on how to do that: http://www.columbuscitycouncil.org/how_do_i/speak.asp)
  • Attend one or all of these meetings and silently indicate you are in support of streetcars
  • Send your council letter to the Editor at The Columbus Dispatch.

To help you with this effort we are providing the Breakfast announcement, contact information, and some talking points.

Please speak up!

MORPC -Announces Transportation Leadership Forums

As we continue into the 21st Century, can we risk pursuing transportation priorities and system improvements the same as we did in the 20th Century?

To answer this question, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission is hosting a series of Ohio Transportation Policy Events that will:

  • Discuss challenges facing the nation’s surface transportation infrastructure and explore opportunities for Ohio's transportation future.
  • Explore new and creative approaches to funding sustainable transportation
  • Help define a new vision for transportation financing and policy development in Ohio
  • Build an agenda of national priorities for Ohio to pursue in Washington
Businesses and workers depend on our transportation system to be safe and dependable. However, funding for key transportation projects are dwindling throughout the country. To address future transportation infrastructure needs and learn new ways of filling transportation funding gaps the first of these events will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Hyatt on Capitol Square.

This event will feature national and state speakers including Senator George V. Voinovich, Jack Basso, Director of Management and Business Development, The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Anne P. Canby, President, Surface Transportation Policy Partnership and Jack Schenendorf, Vice-Chairman, National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission. RSVP by March 7, 2008 to Alicia Kehrig at 614-233-4169 or akehrig@morpc.org.

Registration Fee:
$75.00 for public and private attendees,
$60.00 for MORPC members (elected officials and employees)
$60.00 for State and MPO employees
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 - All Aboard Ohio's 4th Annual Rail/Transit Legislative Summit
